The commitment of the supermarket SMU to the promotion of a more sustainable diet

Through a strategy that combines the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers, the incorporation of innovative healthy products in its shelves and the prevention of food waste, the company contributes to the objectives of World Food Day of the Organization of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

SMU is clear about it. For the supermarket industry, joining the fight against hunger, malnutrition and poverty is a challenge that must be assumed responsibly and proactively, generating actions that involve collaborators, suppliers, customers and communities. Through its subsidiaries Unimarc, Alvi, Mayorista 10 and Super10, the supermarket has implemented a management model that faces the problem from different angles, seeking to be more efficient in its contribution to a more sustainable and universal diet for Chile.

For eleven years, the chain has had an unprecedented alliance for national retail, which was implemented with the objective of promoting the growth of fruit and vegetable producers from different areas of the country. Through a work plan between Unimarc and the Agricultural Development Institute (Indap), local producers can sell their fruits and vegetables in the chain's stores throughout Chile, thus ensuring the sale of their crops and making available healthy and fresh products on the shelves to customers. This collaborative action today is part of Unimarc's “100% Our” SME support program, a pioneering initiative in the national industry that has more than 200 active suppliers, of which 32 are part of the agreement with Indap, coming from Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Maule, Biobío, Ñuble, Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes.

Currently, SMU has different initiatives aimed at not wasting food. Through “Pronto Consumo”, stores work on the liquidation of products that are close to their expiration date, but that are in perfect condition for consumption, being found on shelves with up to 50% discounts. Additionally, they have “- Waste, + Consciousness”, an initiative that manages the direct donation of food to social organizations neighboring the stores and the centralized donation through the Food Network. This action is channeled in all the company's supermarkets throughout Chile, contributing to the feeding of people in vulnerable situations in all regions of the country. In addition, it delivers products to different animal care and protection centers, contributing to the development and nutrition of various species. In this way, the company positively impacts and supports the development of the communities in which it is present.

Marcela Salas, Sustainability Manager at SMU explains that “avoiding food waste is a key objective for our business, it is part of one of the company's strategic axes and a commitment for which we work with conviction and determination. It is work with social, environmental and economic impact that involves our operation, clients and the community in general.”
